  • “Drive technical programs(承接技术项目)”
  • “Rapidly iterate(迅速重复)”
  • “Work closely with other teams(与其他团队密切合作)”
  • “Develop roadmaps(制作路线图)”
  • “Drive program execution(执行项目)”

  • “Process mapping(制作进程图)”
  • “Built KPI dashboard(制作KPI视图)”
  • “Established scalable platforms(建立可扩展平台)”

  • “Process mapping” ---> “Develop roadmaps”
  • “Built KPI dashboard” ---> “Drive program execution”
  • “Established scalable platforms” ---> “Champion program management processes”

工作经历可用“Experience”或“Work Experience”,不宜用“What I’ve Done”之类的创新形式。

The One Step You MUST Do to Make Your CV Stand Out!

" "

When I applied for my first job out of college, I was so happy with myself: I'd created a great CV, I had a solid cover letter template, and I fired off probably at least hundred applications.

Guess how many companies I heard back from? ZERO! Yes, that’s right. I didn't hear back from any of them.

For a while, I wondered to myself, “Why aren’t these companies getting back to me? I have the perfect qualifications for this job!” It never occurred to me that there is something I should have done. Thousands of people apply for job openings online, either through LinkedIn or the company homepage. More often than not, humans are not the first to make contact with an electronic application.

Many large companies use what’s called an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). The system scans CVs for specific keywords that match the job descriptions and then sends the most qualified CVs to the recruiters. The rest are trashed — before they ever even hit a pair of human eyes.

In my case, it’s entirely possible that not a single one of my job applications ever made it to a real person. The ATS is essentially a gatekeeper to for recruiters to only spend time on applications deemed “qualified” by the system.

So how do you use this device to your best advantage? There are some easy tricks to get your CV past that first hurdle. I'll show you how to word your CV so that it gets automatically picked up recruiting software — and goes on to impress a human recruiter.

For the purpose of this article, let’s pretend that you are looking at project management jobs in the technology industry. You come across a listing for a Program Manager role that you’re interested in:

" "

As you read on, notice a few keywords and phrases that stand out:

- "Drive technical programs”
- “Rapidly iterate”
- “Work closely with other teams”
- “Champion program management processes”
- “Develop roadmaps”
- “Drive program execution”

So based on what we know about Applicant Tracking Systems, ask yourself: how can I use keywords and phrases to cater my CV to this job to get past the ATS?

Now, let’s take a look at this example:

As you can see, I was a Project Manager at my last company, ABC Corporation. You might notice that my job description includes similar keywords and phrases but are not quite what the job description stated. Some of those phrases are:

- “Process mapping”
- “Built KPI dashboard”
- “Established scalable platforms”

Similarly, my title at ABC Corporation was “Project Manager”. *It’s 100% acceptable to adjust your title to fit the job description as long as it’s in the same realm*. The job title is one of the top things the ATS looks for. If you have held the same title in the past, you are much more likely to make it through.

Knowing what we know about Applicant Tracking Systems, it’s vital to get these keywords and phrases as closely aligned to the job description as possible. Simply build in the keywords from the job description to replace your current verbiage:

- "Process mapping” ---> “Develop roadmaps”
- “Built KPI dashboard” ---> “Drive program execution”
- “Established scalable platforms” ---> “Champion program management processes”

This is how I optimized my CV. I was working in operations for a hotel company but applying for jobs in the technology industry as a Training & Support Specialist. I had to really revamp my CV to include my skills and duties related to hotel technology systems, training new hires at the hotel, customer service skills and the like despite the fact that those skills were not my main focus at the hotel.

I was very careful to use the exact phrases from the job description that included phrases like “working closely with customers” and “collaborate with others teams”. I also included skills on my CV that reflected my knowledge of technology systems, such as Opera PMS and Point of Sales Systems, Microsoft Office, and Photoshop.

I 100% believe that customizing my  CV to that specific job got me the call from the recruiter. I was soon contacted by a hiring manager after submitting and we were able to continue the conversation that led to my first job in the technology industry.

Now that you have the content portion of your CV in perfect condition, it’s time to consider the formatting of your CV. Remember, these Applicant Tracking Systems are computer-based, so simplicity is key. Here are a few tips to consider when formatting your CV:

  1. Most applicant tracking systems can’t read tables. Therefore, avoid them at all cost.
  2. An ATS also doesn't understand non-standard headers, so it’s best to stay simple, such as “Experience” or “Work Experience,” and avoid creativity, such as “What I’ve Done.”
  3. Spell check! Spell check! Spell check!

I cannot emphasize enough how vital the last point is. Applicant Tracking Systems cannot understand typos. It doesn’t matter how many keywords you have if they are spelled incorrectly.

Make sure you triple check your CV and even have a friend look it over before submitting it. While a human would simply shake their heads at your typos before throwing out your CV, a robot will have absolutely no idea what you are saying and it will discard your CV.

Knowing these tips has been a huge help for my job hunting. There's a lot of advice on the internet about how to make your CV “pretty” and “interesting”, but when it comes down to it, the computer software must trump all. So instead of thinking about how beautiful you can make your CV look, think about who is reading it and make the content shine. It is more important to get your CV to the recruiter than it is to make it look beautiful.
