2. Golmok Vinyl & Pub —

3. Charles H —

4. Gwangjang Market ——

When you think of South Korea, what image comes to mind?

But contemporary Korean culture is so much more than beauty regimens and synchronized dance moves. Benku8 took a team trip to Seoul, where we learned that the coolest side of Korea is the least obvious. Here's a round-up of our favorite surprise spots in this spectacular city.

1. The Columns Project Space — hipster Gallery-Cafe

Tucked among auto shops and manufacturing plants, this warehouse-turned-gallery showcases dynamic installations by emerging local artists.

Walls of exposed brick, brushed concrete, and raw wood enclose indoor gardens and trees.

The soaring ceiling and communal tables yield Brooklyn beer hall vibes. In fact, the surrounding hipster hotbed of young artists, artisans, and designers draws frequent comparison to Brooklyn.

While the art alone at the Columns is worth a visit, the cafe housed within the space adds incentive with home-roasted coffee beans and handmade cakes.

2. Golmok Vinyl & Pub — Funky LP Bar

While Seoul is home to vinyl bars aplenty, Golmok gets our vote for Seoul's coolest late-night hangout. The dim space boasts all the coziness and eclecticism of a rockstar's attic. While we appreciate the friendly service and top-notch people watching, the bar's hands-down greatest feature is the wall-to-wall vinyl collection.

DJs spin selections from the stockpile every night of the week. While music styles vary from DJ to DJ, they're sometimes determined by themed parties—for instance, a chill night of reggae to commemorate Bob Marley's birthday. If you're looking for a mellow setting to catch up with a friend, we recommend visiting on a weeknight.

3. Charles H — Swanky Speakeasy

Try the killer cocktails transforming Seoul's beverage industry. This speakeasy hides behind an unmarked door in the basement of the upmarket Four Seasons Hotel. The low-lit venue epitomizes elegance and romance—with correspondingly extravagant prices. But this jewel is worth the splurge. It's named after Prohibition-era American author Charles H. Baker, Jr., who journeyed from Cairo to Shanghai on his quest for the perfect cocktail. In his honor, the bar celebrates cocktail lore, history, and geography with passion and precision.

Among its impeccable offerings is Shanghai Breakfast, which balances Venezuelan rum, Scotch, black sesame, honey, and cream. Order the Manhattan flight to sample three versions of the classic cocktail—recipes from 1870, 1917, and 2002.

Don't leave without sneaking a peek at the hidden KTV room, where American movie star Matt Damon was recently spotted with mic in hand.

4. Gwangjang Market — Traditional Snack Center

Maybe this gem isn't so secret. In fact, tourist have been thronging the place for decades. But since its corridors contain countless surprises, we think it still deserves a mention. One of Korea's largest traditional markets, it offers everything from handicrafts to quality silk. But the real highlight is the mouthwatering selection of local treats.

Bindaetteok mung bean pancakes are a classic. They sizzle on oil-slicked skillets all over the market, and that's for good reason—they're golden discs of salty, savory satisfaction.

Equally ubiquitous is tteokbokki, a dish of soft rice cakes bathed in spicy-sweet chili sauce. Be sure to order a heaping plate.

But don't get full before tracking down less obvious fare, like japchae-kimbap. The hybrid dish combines vegetable-laced glass noodles and a tuna-topped rice roll packed with ham, fish cake, cheese, and pickled daikon.

If you're lucky, you'll witness a truly amazing sight: Korean imo (ayi) hand-mixing inconceivable quantities of kimchi in colossal plastic buckets.
